Remote vs overseas: two different paths
Reading · 8 min · Free preview
People often say "work abroad" to mean two very different things. Understanding the difference saves months of confusion.
Path 1: Remote work from the Philippines
You stay in the Philippines and work for a foreign company over the internet.
- How you are hired: often as an independent contractor, sometimes as an employee through an "employer of record" service, or through a Philippine-registered outsourcing firm.
- What you need: strong, reliable internet with a backup, a quiet workspace, your own equipment, and comfort with the client's timezone.
- Taxes: as a contractor, you are generally responsible for registering with the BIR and filing your own taxes and contributions.
- Pros: no relocation, stay near family, pay is often in foreign currency.
- Cons: global competition, fewer benefits as a contractor, possible night hours.
Path 2: Overseas employment
You move to another country on a work visa to work for an employer there.
- How you are hired: through a DMW-licensed Philippine recruitment agency, or through direct hiring by a foreign employer, which is restricted and must be processed with the DMW.
- What you need: a valid job offer and contract, the correct work visa for that country, and the documents the DMW requires before departure.
- Pros: international experience, sometimes a path to longer-term residence depending on the country's rules.
- Cons: time away from family, relocation costs, visa rules you do not control.
A common middle path
Many people start with remote work for international clients from the Philippines, build an international track record, then decide if moving abroad makes sense.
Next week you will decide which path fits you now.
