Week 1: Pick your IT role
Matching your current job to an IT role
Reading · 10 min · Free preview
Your past job is not wasted time. It is evidence. Here is how common backgrounds map to the four entry roles. Use it as a starting point, not a rule.
BPO agents and team leads
- Voice or chat support on a tech account: IT support or technical support. You already troubleshoot with customers and log tickets.
- Quality analyst: QA tester. You already score against checklists and write findings.
- Workforce, reporting or real-time analyst: data/reporting analyst. You already live in Excel.
- Team lead: IT support with a path to team lead, or QA. Coaching and escalation handling are valued.
Teachers
- Lesson planning and step-by-step explaining fit IT support (writing knowledge base articles, training users) and QA (writing test cases).
- Grade tracking and school reports fit data/reporting.
Nurses and healthcare workers
- Charting, protocols and calm under pressure fit QA (careful, documented, process-driven) and IT support, especially for clinics and health-tech companies that use hospital systems.
- If you used an electronic medical records system, mention it. Health-tech teams value people who understand clinical workflows.
Admin, sales, banking, retail
- Admin and banking staff who handle spreadsheets and reconciliations fit data/reporting.
- Sales and retail staff who handle customers and point-of-sale systems fit IT support.
A quick test
Write down the three tasks you do most at work. Next to each one, write which IT role uses a similar skill. The role that shows up most often is a strong candidate. Bring the result to this week's live call.
