On October 21, 2026, executives of customer experience software company Genesys told reporters in Quezon City that AI will let Philippine BPO workers handle more complex tasks and serve more customers, and their survey found 62% of Philippine CX leaders plan to roll out AI tools to assist staff within two years, according to BusinessMirror. That lines up with the industry's own plan: IBPAP's IT-BPM Roadmap 2028, previewed in September, puts the "AI-Enabled Digital Filipino Worker" at the center of the next phase. For agents and career shifters, the message is the same from both sides: the jobs that grow are the ones where you work with AI and handle what it can't.

If you're on a voice account right now, you've probably already seen this up close. A new chatbot on the client's website, an "agent assist" panel suggesting replies, fewer simple calls and more angry escalations. That's the shift in real life.

What did Genesys say about AI and BPO jobs?

Genesys said AI makes CX jobs more valuable, but only for workers who know how to use it well. Its country manager for the Philippines, Kulachart Ngernpermpoon, said: "The presence of AI makes the jobs in CX industry more valuable," and added that outcomes "would depend on how employees apply the technology and their knowledge of the tasks they handle," as reported by BusinessMirror.

The figures came from Genesys' State of Customer Experience report, per the same article:

  • 62% of Philippine CX leaders plan to deploy AI-powered tools to assist staff over the next two years, above the Asia-Pacific average of 55% and the global figure of 47%.
  • Philippine CX leaders expect to spend an average of 32% of their customer service budgets on AI-powered technology over the next 12 months.
  • 78% of Filipino respondents said speed and completeness of resolution matter more than whether a human or AI fixes their issue.
  • 73% said virtual agents or chatbots made it easier to resolve issues themselves.

Keep in mind who's talking. Genesys sells AI tools for contact centers, so of course it's optimistic. The numbers are still useful because they show what your future employers are planning to buy.

What is IBPAP's IT-BPM Roadmap 2028?

The roadmap is the industry association's plan and forecast for Philippine IT-BPM through 2028. IBPAP previewed it at the International IT-BPM Summit 2026, with the full release set for October, according to NewsBytes.PH.

The key numbers, as reported by the Daily Tribune and NewsBytes:

  • Best case: up to $50.5 billion in revenue and 2.14 million jobs by 2028, which is $10.2 billion and 250,000 jobs more than 2025.
  • Slower-growth case: $43.3 billion in revenue, with employment falling from 1.89 million to 1.85 million.
  • Growth areas named: global capability centers, healthcare information management, banking and financial services, AI operations, model evaluation, data services, and animation and game development.

IBPAP's "AI-Enabled Digital Filipino Worker" pairs AI proficiency and domain expertise with human skills like judgment, empathy and leadership. Outgoing IBPAP president Jack Madrid put it plainly: "The next chapter belongs to the AI-Enabled Digital Filipino Worker."

Why does this matter if you're a BPO agent or fresh grad?

It matters because the gap between the two scenarios is where your career sits. In the best case the industry adds jobs. In the slower case headcount actually shrinks a little. Either way, the work is moving toward roles that use AI and need judgment, and away from simple, scripted tasks.

Here's how I'd translate that into plain job terms:

  • Simple tier 1 tasks (password resets, "where's my order", basic billing questions) are the most likely to move to chatbots and self-service.
  • Escalations and complex cases are likely to stay human longer, because they need judgment and patience a script can't supply.
  • IT roles inside the same companies (IT support, QA for the client's apps, data and reporting, workforce tools) are where BPO experience transfers well.
  • Newer AI-adjacent roles like AI operations and model evaluation are named in the roadmap. Expect job titles to vary a lot between companies, so read the actual duties in each post.

The good news for agents: you already have the "human skills" half of IBPAP's definition. You've de-escalated customers at 3 a.m. on a US holiday. What you're missing is the technical half, and that part is learnable. Our BPO to IT career shift post maps out which of your skills transfer and what to add.

Which roles should a BPO agent aim for now?

Aim for roles that sit right next to what you already do, so your account experience counts. These are the ones I'd look at first:

  • IT support or service desk. Same tickets, same SLAs, same angry users, but now you're fixing the laptop instead of reading a script. Start with our guide to entry-level IT support jobs.
  • QA tester. You've used the client's app more than most of their developers. Turning "this is broken" into a clear bug report is a real skill.
  • Data or reporting analyst. If you've ever stared at an AHT or CSAT dashboard and wondered how it's built, learn SQL and Google Sheets properly.
  • Internal tools and workforce roles. Someone has to set up, monitor and improve the AI tools Genesys and others are selling. Watch for these on your own company's internal job board.

Moving internally is often the fastest route. You already have a badge, a manager who knows you, and a record of showing up. If your company runs an internal posting system, check it before you check JobStreet.

Can you shift without quitting your BPO job?

Yes, and for most people that's the smarter way. Keep the income, the 13th month pay and the HMO while you study on your rest days and before shift. Our guide to learning IT while working full time has sample schedules for night shift.

Doing it alone works if you're disciplined. What most agents lack is not intelligence. It's someone to tell them which role to pick, how to rewrite "handled inbound calls" into something an IT hiring manager respects, and whether their project is good enough. That's the gap the Career Shifter Track fills: role picking in week 1, a resume rewrite with coach feedback in week 3, and two mock interviews before you apply. Live calls are recorded, so a graveyard shift doesn't lock you out. The preview lessons are free.

What to do about it this week

  1. Notice what AI already does on your account. Write down three tasks a bot or agent-assist tool now handles. That's your evidence of where the work is going.
  2. Write down three things you handle that the bot can't. Escalations, multi-step troubleshooting, explaining a messy billing history. These become resume lines.
  3. Check your company's internal job board for IT, QA, data or workforce roles. Note the skills listed.
  4. Pick one target role and one free course for it. For IT support, the Google IT Support Professional Certificate on Coursera (financial aid is available). For data, SQLBolt plus Google Sheets.
  5. Grab the free IT Job Starter Kit if you need a checklist to follow.

Frequently asked questions

Will AI replace BPO jobs in the Philippines?

Industry voices like Genesys and IBPAP expect AI to change BPO jobs more than remove them, with simple tasks moving to automation and people handling complex work. IBPAP's own slower-growth scenario still shows a small drop in headcount by 2028, so the outcome isn't guaranteed either way.

What is the AI-Enabled Digital Filipino Worker?

It's IBPAP's term for the worker the IT-BPM industry wants by 2028: someone who combines AI proficiency and domain expertise with human skills like judgment, empathy and leadership.

What does IBPAP's Roadmap 2028 forecast?

According to reports on the September preview, the best case is up to $50.5 billion in revenue and 2.14 million jobs by 2028, and the slower case is $43.3 billion with employment slipping to 1.85 million.

What IT jobs can a BPO agent move into?

The closest moves are IT support or service desk, QA testing, data or reporting roles, and internal tools or workforce roles. Your customer handling and ticketing experience counts toward all of them.

Do I need to learn coding to stay relevant in BPO?

Not necessarily. Many of the roles closest to BPO work, like IT support and manual QA, need little or no coding, but they do need troubleshooting skills and comfort using AI tools.
